Blackwell’s Charleigh Haskins – blackwell maroons athlete spotlight – presented by stillwater medical blackwell

Now a junior in high school, Charleigh Haskins is a three-year starter on the Blackwell girls golf team, a sport she picked up in the eighth grade. After qualifying for regionals as a freshman, Haskins is ready to advance to state after missing the chance last season.

“My career highlight, so far, has been returning to play after sitting out last year due to the COVID shutdown,” Haskins said. “My game has gotten much better, and I am eager to compete.”

Outside of athletics, Haskins is involved in National Honor Society, gifted and talented, future health professionals, pep club, vice president of student council, and is a mat maid for the high school wrestling team. Haskins has been selected to the Youth Leadership Oklahoma for the class of 2021. She’s concurrently enrolled at Redlands Community College and attends Pioneer Technology Center, where she studies biomedical sciences. In her spare time, Haskins volunteered at the Blackwell Hospital, and she would help deliver meals to homebound citizens in Blackwell.

“My grandma and I would pick up meals from our local church every Wednesday night and deliver them to people with medical problems or to those who struggle to get out on their own,” Haskins said. “It’s something I’ve been doing since eighth grade.”

Upon graduation, Haskins is interested in attending Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where she wants to pursue a career in the medical field as an optometrist.

“I’d like to open up my own practice one day,” Haskins said. “When I was in elementary school, I went through vision therapy myself. And that impacted my school life, so now I want to help kids who had problems like me.”

Haskins credits her parents, Shawn and Amy, for her success in life.

“My parents have encouraged me to do my best even when times are tough,” Haskins said. “They always support me and encourage me to continue practicing and giving it my all.”
