Ponca City’s Holley Blackstar – Mom of the Month – presented By Ponca City Real Estate Co.

By Derrick Smith

There are things that are required for a student-athlete to be the best that they can be. They have to work hard, put in the time, and have to make sacrifices. Sometimes, parents have to make sacrifices too in order to see their kids succeed. Holley Blackstar has four kids that attend Ponca City schools and she says that they are happy to help their kids be successful.

“My husband and I travel around the United States year round,” she said. “We want to make sure that our kids get the opportunities that they deserve. I also stay involved in the booster clubs to encourage parents to come support their kids.”

Blackstar’s daughter, Margaret, is a senior and plays softball and basketball. Mallory is also a senior and she is a member of the Po Hi-Steppers drill team. A sophomore, Madelyn plays softball and is also a Po Hi-Stepper. Holley’s son Marshall is in the eighth grade and plays basketball and golf.

Being involved in her kids’ lives is a way that Blackstar stays close with her kids.
“Participating in my kids’ sports is one way of showing that I love them,” she said. “The sacrifices I make are just for a season, and I know it’s all worth it in the end. I love my kids and watching them grow up.”

When she is not cheering on her kids, Holley is a teacher for Epic Charter Schools. But she says between sports and work, she is still able to make time for her family.

“In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and participating in their activities,” she said. “I am also a member of the Tip-Off Club, Stepper booster club, and Vice-President of the Diamond Club.”

Blackstar says that she loves the community of Ponca City and is thankful that her kids are a part of such a great school system and community.

“I enjoy watching the community supporting the high school students,” she said. “Also the  local businesses as they donate their time and money to help our kids succeed. I also love how many of our coaches make an impact on our kids on and off the floor, teaching them how to be a better athlete and a better person.”
