Stillwater’s Drue Brown – Teacher Spotlight – Presented By Simmons Bank

By Derrick Smith

The teaching profession is one where the teachers share ideas and work together to help each other to succeed. Teachers can also get some good advice from each other that can help with a short term situation or something more long term. Drue Brown says that he has one piece of advice that he keeps at the front of his mind.

“Some of the best advice I have received over the years is to just make sure that every day that I go to work and love what I am doing,” Brown said. “The day I stop loving it will be the day that I stop doing it.”

Drue is in his eighth year of teaching at Stillwater High School and he currently teaches Geometry and serves as the head coach of the Stillwater volleyball team. He has also taught Geography and Physical Education for five years at Stillwater Middle School and for two years he was a Physical Education teacher at Will Rogers Elementary.

Brown’s decision to become a teacher was bolstered by a teacher he had when he was a student.

“I had a great fifth grade social studies teacher , Mrs. Ellard from Tecumseh,” he said. “She inspired me to teach geography when I made my decision to change my major.”

Teaching has allowed Drue to be a part of not just the lives of his students, but also other members of their families.

“I love walking though the community and seeing the kids or siblings of students that I taught and having interactions with them,” he said. “It is the closest to famous I am ever going to get, and it really inspires me to keep having an impact.”

Whenever he is not teaching in the classroom, Brown enjoys spending time with his family.

“I have been married to my wife Natalie for nine years,” he stated. “We have three kids, our son Andy and two daughters, Bella and Corbi. We love sports and animals. We currently have two great danes and a basset hound.”
