Cushing’s Kerik Brown – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Ortho Oklahoma

Kerik Brown, who goes by KB, is a senior at Cushing High School, where she competes on both the slow pitch and fast pitch softball teams. KB plays shortstop and is the player who gets the Lady Tigers started behind the plate as the leadoff hitter. KB leads the team in batting average (.537) and on-base percentage (.612). In 41 at bats this season, KB has 22 hits, eight doubles, three triples, and two home runs with 14 RBIs.

“Kerik is the one player who gets us going,” coach Nikki York said. “She is our spark offensively and is a very tough out. A great two-strike approach hitter and hasn’t struck out all year. She is off to a great start for her senior year and our team thrives off her and the way she plays.”

KB was named first-team all-district last year as a utility player and was also honorable mention her sophomore year. She also received the defensive player of the year for the Lady Tigers last season.

“If there is one word to describe KD best on the field, it’s clutch,” York said. “She is the player who I want at the plate with the winning run-in scoring position or who I want to have the ball on the defensive end. Her teammates also trust in her to get the job done, which speaks volumes of her.”

“She lives and breathes softball,” she continued. “Whether it’s baserunning, defense, or offense, she always has the right mindset. This is one of the things that separates her from the rest and makes her a great player. She has always been coachable and continues to grow and learn the game.”

KB has a couple of offers to play at the collegiate level. Wherever she decides, KB plans to study to become a physical therapist. Outside of high school athletics, KB works at the Steer Inn in town and plays with her travel team, OK Pure.
