Carney’s John Martin – Presented by BancFirst

From a young age, John Martin fell in love with the game of basketball and knew it was something he was going to play.

Martin, who is a sophomore at Carney High School, says that playing the game he loves and representing his school is something that he is proud of.

“I’ve always wanted to play high school basketball,” Martin said. “I remember watching Coach Reedy in high school when I was in elementary and always wanted to be just like him and represent the school. It means a lot to represent the school and community especially when our  team has the potential to be the best team in the conference.”

Martin plays point guard for the Bulldogs’ basketball team. He is also a member of the Ag department.

As the oldest of seven siblings, Martin says that he wants to be a good role model so they can have someone to look up to like he did.

“My biggest role models are definitely my dad and coach Reedy,” he said. “They are always there for me and push me to work harder. Also, coach Duncan because he motivates me to do my best on and off the court.”

Along with hard work, Martin attributes some of his success to those teammates that he has competed alongside.

“I appreciate all of my teammates,” he said. “I enjoy working and practicing with Bo Ramsey because we have been playing together for eight years and we push each other to be better. An under-the-radar type of athlete is Dalton because even though he may not be the best player on the team, he always brings energy off the bench and stays positive.”

Along with playing basketball, John also enjoys watching it as well. And he has a favorite among NBA players.

“My top professional basketball player is definitely Ja Morant,” he stated. “I like his play style, confidence, and energy. watching him play makes me wanna play with that same energy and confidence.”

Throughout his career, Martin has enjoyed some memorable moments, but he says that there are a couple that stand out the most.

“Probably getting Offensive Player of the Year last season or coming back after a wrist injury this season and just being back on the court with my teammates.”
