Ponca City Teacher of the Month: Tanner Williams – Presented By First National Bank Of Oklahoma

Taner Williams teaches Oklahoma History and the Wildcat Way to freshmen at Ponca City High School. In addition to his teaching roles in the school, Williams also coaches for the Wildcat football and golf teams, and even assists driving the bus at times.

Outside of the classroom, Williams enjoys spending time with his wife Addie and three children Lyla (8), Luke (5), and Leif (2).

Williams began his teaching career in 2019 after working in the oil and gas industry before a layoff led him down a new path.

“While I was in college I always thought that I would coach and teach but the opportunity and financial benefits in oil and gas pulled me away,” Williams said. “When I got laid off it was like God was finally forcing my hand to follow his will for my life and not my own and once I gave in it was like everything fell into place and started working in my favor instead of against me.”

Williams has enjoyed his time in the classroom and appreciates everything that Ponca City has to offer its families and students.

“My favorite part about being at Ponca is that it is a big place with lots of people, but has that small town feel,” Williams said. “Also there is constant support whether it is from another teacher or principal or administrator downtown. I always feel like there is positive support any time I need it.”

As a student, Williams was inspired by many of his own teachers who provided fun learning experiences and he has been working to do the same for his own students.

“Just seeing how multiple people in my life helped me get to where I am in my life really made me want to give back to something that gave me so much,” he said. “As for what currently inspires me, I would have to say Mr. Anthony McCrary. The passion he teaches with and his ability to relate to students is top notch. He is just one of those people that inspire others around him to do more and be better.”
