OFFENSE
The Cushing Tigers and coach Rusty Morgan have big plans for the 2022 season with all 11 starters returning to their fast-paced spread offense. “This team is ready and has been working to get back on the field in August,” Morgan said. “We will be experienced and looking at a very high character senior group to lead us through the 2022 season. Moving into 4-A District 3 will give us a different schedule, but these guys will be ready for the new opportunities and challenges.” Leading the way is quarterback Blaze Berlowitz (6-3, 200, Sr.), a two-year starter, three-sport athlete, and field general. In his career Berlowitz has passed for over 6,200 yards and 58 touchdowns. He’s also run for over 400 yards and six scores. Noah Jones (5-10, 180, Sr.) had over 1,000 all-purpose yards in 2021 and nine touchdowns. Camden Crooks (6-0, 190, Sr.) headlines a talented crop of wide receivers including Lane Yaunt (6-3, 170, Sr.) and Brody Berlowitz (6-2, 215, Sr.). Crooks is a three-year starter, four sport athlete, and two-time 300-meter hurdle state champion. He recently became the state powerlifting champion in his weight division and is looking to add to his impressive career stats with over 200 catches, 3,355 yards, and 40 touchdowns. Look for Brody Todd (6-1, 250, Sr.) who returns to a group of experienced linemen that will lead the charge for the Tigers.
DEFENSE
An experienced group returns on defense as well with nine returning starters on the Tigers’ aggressive 4-2-5 defense. In 2022 speed and pressure is the name of the game. Linebacker Riley Matheson (6-0, 200, Sr.) excelled in the system last year as he racked up 165 tackles, 24 for a loss, and had three sacks. GW Burget (6-1, 175, Sr.) contributed 72 tackles of his own while backup quarterback John Hilligoss (Jr.) also appeared at linebacker. Nicolas Flores (5-4, 270, Sr.) returns with another year under his belt on the defensive front. Earning the nickname “Panda,” Flores has been putting in extra time in the weight room this offseason and is expected to have a solid year of production on both the offensive and defensive line. In 2021 the Tigers were a takeaway factory. Crooks and Yaunt used their great hands and size to their advantage when appearing as defensive backs. Cooks had 81 tackles with five interceptions and Yaunt managed 97 tackles and six interceptions.
