QUICK HITS:
Mannford hosts Perry to open the season. It’s the first game between the teams since 1989. Mannford won that meeting 23-7.
Mannford and Cleveland will meet for the 52nd consecutive season on September 16th. Cleveland has won four in a row and is 36-17 since 1971 against its Lake Keystone rival.
OFFENSE
Entering his third year leading the Mannford Pirates, head coach Dustin Kinard has one main goal, keep getting better. Kinard says the Pirates are looking forward to building on the gains they made last season and competing in a new district (3A-1). Seven starters return for the Mannford offense. Kinard says the philosophy for the offense is simple, spread the ball around and score points. Quarterback Jake Moore (6-3, 195, Sr.) leads the Mannford offense. He’s a talented, four-sport athlete that is a versatile offensive weapon. On the outside, Cameron Rodriguez (5-10, 175, Jr.) and Hunter Harper (6-3, 190, Sr.) are a pair of experienced receivers that will look to make plays in the pass game. Up front, Alex Remington (6-1, 230, Jr.) will anchor the offensive line from the center position. Kinard says Remington has started in 18 of the 20 games he’s played in his career. Remington is trusted by the coaches and is expected to be one of the vocal leaders this year. Returning with Remington on the line are tackles Daniel Webb (6-1, 220, Sr.) and Riker Rowlan (6-5, 275, So.).
DEFENSE
The Pirates return eight defensive starters and will use a 4-2-5 scheme as their base. Kinard says the Mannford defense wants to swarm to the ball and that is being taught every day in practice. Along with his duties on offense, Jake Moore will line up at linebacker on defense. He was the leading tackler last season and will look to, again, have a great year on both sides of the ball. Joining Moore at linebacker is Dustin Williams (6-0, 175, Jr.) In the defensive backfield, the Pirates return three starters in corner Cameron Rodriguez, safety Hunter Harper, and safety Lane Ward (5-10, 170, Jr.). Up front, Daniel Webb will look to lead the attack from his defensive end position. Assisting Kinard this year are Jason Landrum, Kenny Gooch, Bryan Golemon, Josh Coleman, Josh Snelson, and Phillip Spess.
