OFFENSE

The Maroons are looking for their first winning season since 1997. They are only one year removed from finishing 5-5 which is the best mark in recent times. Head coach Brent Parker will rely on a young crop of players, featuring one of the best players to come through Blackwell in a while. Kruz Goff (6-2, 195, So.) won the state wrestling championship as a freshman. Goff will be tough to tackle at running back. He’s one of eight starters returning on offense. Peyton Jones (6-3, 295, Sr.) is one of the more athletic linemen in the district. He’s the leader of an offensive line with two more returning starters in Peyton Lennon (6-0, 215, Sr.), Kolby Looper (6-2, 225, Sr.) and Anthony Wiley (6-0, 220, Jr.). A pair of sophomores give the Maroons some versatility in the backfield. Kevin Rios (6-3, 175, So.) can play either quarterback or wide receiver and Jason Osgood (6-0, 175, So.) will see action at running back and receiver and Wiley can even be used some as a fullback. Blackwell was held to single digits in seven of ten games in 2021. That number should move upward with the amount of experience returning.

DEFENSE

Blackwell allowed a shade under 31 points per game in 2021. Seven starters return to the defense. J.D. McCleary (6-0, 290, Sr.) and James Tripp (6-1, 180, Sr.) are part of the front four. Tripp has balanced football with a demanding F.F.A. schedule where he’s won many championships. He will see time on both sides of the ball. Zaine McDonald (5-10, 185, Jr.) is one of the more aggressive players on the defense. McDonald is joined by Eyzic Burke (6-0, 195, So.) at outside linebacker. Burke has had a great off-season and saw quite a bit of action last year as a freshman. Lane Looper (5-11, 160, So.), Skyler Landwehr (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Camron Short- Welch (6-0, 170, So.) return to the secondary. Blackwell was able to stay in the race for the post-season a year ago with a three-game winning streak in the district. The schedule will be a little tougher this season. Blackwell is one of many teams in 2A-1 with a decent amount of returning experience.
