OFFENSE

Entering his first year leading Perkins-Tryon, new head coach Dawayne Hudson is optimistic about what’s in store for this season. “I’m excited for this upcoming season,” Hudson said. “I look forward to finding out what we can hang our hat on.” Offensively, Hudson said he wants to be a physical team that runs the ball and will do that out of multiple spread formations. Perkins-Tryon will try to be patient offensively and take what the defense gives them. The running game will be led by Tre Stevenson (6-0, 225, So.). Last year, Stevenson ran for over 500 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He will look to build on those numbers this year as he moves into the starting lineup. He is a very capable back that will demand attention from opposing teams. When defenses do start to load up against Stevenson and the run game, Perkins-Tryon will take shots deep. The Demons also want to play with pace, using tempo, motion, and shifts to help quarterback Gunnar Thrash (6-0, 185, Sr.) identify the defense before snap. Thrash has several returning weapons including wide receivers Gannon McCutchen (6-0, 200, Sr.) and Hunter Robinson (5-10, 175, Sr.). Helping protect Thrash will be Nick Rains (5-10, 250, Jr.) and Logan Holloway (6-3, 250, Sr.).

DEFENSE

Defensively, Perkins-Tryon will work mostly out of a 3-4 base, but they will show multiple fronts and coverages to keep offenses guessing. Hudson said the goal for his defense is to have over 50 percent of their plays go for zero or negative yards. That is a big goal but with four returning starters on defense, the Demons have the foundation to be aggressive and achieve that goal. Tre Stevenson will anchor things along the defensive line for Perkins-Tryon while Gannon McCutchen will look to wreak havoc in the backfield from his linebacker position. McCutchen registered 46 tackles last year, including a tackle for loss and a sack. With the aggressive style of defense Perkin-Tryon wants to play, they need to be strong in the secondary. Hunter Robinson and Cashtin Craycraft (5-8, 175, Sr.) will lead the Demon’s secondary. Hudson likes what he has seen from his Demons so far. “The kids are working really hard,” he said. “They want to be a part of something special.” Assistant coaches for Perkins-Tryon include Lance Hoggatt, Bryce Hoggatt, Russell Longbrake, Aaron Barta, Joel Franks, and Kevin Love.
