Kanaan Guerrero is a sophomore at Cushing High School and plays basketball for the Tigers. Guerrero has been playing basketball since he was in kindergarten and has always had a passion for the sport.
Guerrero is always working hard to improve and bring new elements to his game.
“My favorite part of the game is executing an offensive or defensive play in the game that I have been working on in practice,” Guerrero said.
For instance, Guerrero has been working on improving his handles and keeping defenders on their heels.
“I have been shooting the ball really well this season and the one thing about being a shooter is that opponents have to respect your shot and that can open up your game so much,” Guerrero said. “Also I can dribble well left and right so that can really surprise the opponents.”
Guerrero’s hard work in the offseason has paid off as he’s shooting the ball very well and averaging around 40 percent from behind the arc this winter. This has allowed the Tigers to spread the floor and Guerro getting open opportunities for his teammates.
“My favorite thing about being on a team is having my friends and family on the sideline cheering for me after I make a shot or make a play,” Guerrero said.
Guerrero looks to bring an energy to Cushing every night that is infectious with his teammates.
“I think a great quality to bring to a team is defense and energy,” he said.“ Along with confidence, accountability, and good communication.”
Guerrero credits his father for sparking his initial and continued interest and passion for basketball.
“If I had to pick anyone that inspires and is a role model to me it would have to be my dad,” he said. “He was always my coach and was a really good shooter himself. I want to be able to shoot like him. Plus he really pushes me to keep working hard.”
Up until this year, Guerrero had played multiple sports, but decided to focus his full athletic attention on basketball and isn’t regretting the decision one bit.
