Wellston’s Emma Wartchow – North OK Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Central Rural Electric cooperative

Wellston High School junior Emma Wartchow is a dual-athlete for the Tigers, playing center field for them in softball and captain of the cheer team.

“I fell in love with softball when I was in Little League,” Wartchow said. “I love playing because of the competitiveness. Also, I love playing for my dad, who is the high school head coach. I started competitive cheer when I was six and I have loved it ever since. Now I’m going to be a senior and I’ve made captain.”

Softball is in full swing, and Wartchow said the Tigers are having some ups and downs, but team morale is high and they are having a great time.

“I would like to hit it over the fence this year,” she said. “I want to make a diving catch and have at least a 500 batting average. For my team, I want us to have a winning season and become closer as a team.”

When it comes to the legacy Wartchow hopes to leave at Wellston, being remembered for her character tops the list over hits, throws, or runs.

“Having character means using action to show leadership rather than using words,” she said. “I try to have good character by being a good leader on and off the field, not by yelling at people; instead leading by example and helping out when needed.

“I always try to keep a positive attitude and bring up the team even when we aren’t doing great,” she continued. “Even if you are having a bad day, try to be positive and not bring others down with you. The best softball players have bad days, but instead of getting frustrated and doing worse, they learn how to work under pressure to fix their mistakes.”
