Newkirk Tigers Boys Basketball Preview – Presented by Ponca City Specialty Clinic

Coach: Hayden Hackworth

21-22 Record: 16-9

Newkirk coach Hayden Hackworth is in his second season with the Tigers, his first as head coach. With several starters back Hackworth and the Tigers are looking to build off their success of last season. “After a 16-9, 2021-22 season we bring back three starters. We will lean on post Clayton Bergman and guard Daniel Harrelson to lead the way offensively. We look for seniors Landen Vap and Gunnar Cole to play strong tenacious defense night in and night out,” said coach Hackworth.

According to coach Hackworth, Daniel Harrelson has a chance at being one of the best scorers in Oklahoma this season. “He has a deadly midrange game and excels at finishing at the rim,” said coach Hackworth.

Clayton Bergman will handle post duties where his ability to get to the rim for points and rebounds sets him apart. “Clayton is a high IQ big who scores with ease. He understands angles and positioning to take advantage of a mismatch inside. He also has guard passing skills in the post and is excellent at creating for others,” said coach Hackworth.

Landen Vap is the engine that makes this team run. Vap is willing to take the punishment, give up his body and create shots for his teammates. Look for a few underclassmen to be called upon for big minutes this season.
