Peyton Banister is a multi-sport athlete at Newkirk High School. As a member of the cheer, basketball, soccer, and track teams, Peyton’s coaches have had a big impact on her life. She says that she is thankful for their influence and helping shape her into the person she is today.
“One of my role models is Coach Watkins,” she said. “She has taught me how to be a better athlete, friend, just a general better person. I truly look up to her. Coach Kim Wilson has also shown me that it takes a lot to get where you want to be. It took her many years and rebuilding to get to where she is. And coach Jacobs has really taught me to be open about all subjects. He is not only a great teacher but a great coach, he pushes you in and out of the classroom no matter who you are. Even though he’s not from here, he is some of the biggest drive for our school.”
Along with the help of her coaches, Banister has worked hard to get where she is. She says that her biggest motivation is the goals that she has set for herself.
“I have put in lots of time outside of practices,” she stated. “I show up to every open gym and put in all the hours. My drive to want to play a sport in college keeps me motivated. My family, friends and coaches also keep me motivated.”
Throughout her career, Peyton has enjoyed a lot of memorable moments in all of her sports.
“I have made a lot of great memories playing sports,” she said. “I think some of my top ones are going to state for track my junior year, making the soccer playoffs my freshman year, and being a two-time cheer State Champion.”
The teammates that she competes alongside are a special group to Peyton. She says that she is thankful to be a part of a team with them.
“I enjoy working against Jordyn the most,” Banister said. “She makes me better. She makes me run faster and work harder. She is always there for me and to make me better. I think that Sammylin Decosta is probably one of our more underrated players. She may not be the best at everything but she will always try, she is your biggest hype man and is always there for you cheering you on.”
Peyton is also a member of the student council and a class officer.
