When an athlete steps out on the field or court wearing their team’s uniform, they are playing for more than just themselves. They are also playing for their school and community. Aidan ‘AJ’ Landes says that he is proud to be able to compete for his school.
“It means a lot to be able to wear and represent my school’s name,” he said. “Our town has supported me the entire way so far so the least I can do is sell out every game to show them the mutual love.”
Landes is a junior at Ponca City High School, where he plays football and basketball and also runs track. He is also involved in the Student Athletic Advisory Council and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Becoming the athlete and the person that he is today has taken a lot of work, but AJ knows that he could not have done it on his own.
“It takes a lot to be successful,” he said. “Keep your head down and work whether things are going your way or not. I have also had some great people in my life that have been influential for me. Some of my biggest role models are my old coach Herb Roland, my parents, and my uncle. Coach Herb had a big impact on my life from the time I was in elementary school up until he passed a few years ago. My parents and my uncle Cory are my biggest supporters and have been since the day I was born.”
Ponca City head boys basketball coach, Jacob Birnbaum, says that Landes is an outstanding athlete, student, and an example for the younger players to look up to.
“AJ is a leader on and off the court,” Birnbaum said. “He is an incredible student who boasts a 4.0 GPA. He is also a phenomenal leader who is involved in leadership roles for multiple extracurricular organizations.”
Out of all of the opponents that he and his teammates face, Landes has two that he enjoys getting the victory over the most.
“Enid and Bartlesville are my two favorite teams to beat when we play them.”
