Educators work hard to be able to not only teach their students, but also to make an impact on their life. While passing on knowledge is a high priority, Kerri Fischer says that there is more to being a teacher than just the work.

“I love getting to build relationships with others and helping my students to learn and grow,” she said. “I like keeping things fun and engaging so I’m open to trying activities and new things to make that possible. I also enjoy continuing to learn as I go from experience, my peers, and from my amazing students.”

Fischer is in her first year as a teacher at Ponca City High School, where she teaches Geometry and Algebra 2.

The teachers that she had as a student played a role in Kerri making the decision to become a teacher. She says that she is thankful for all the teachers that she had along the way.

“I had some very influential teachers in high school that took the time to make the subject area fun, their classrooms inviting and safe and who loved what they did and genuinely cared about their students,” Fischer said. “I felt so supported and encouraged by them and wanted to be that person for someone else. My high school math teachers particularly my freshman teacher that supported and encouraged me through her class but also my entire high school experience. I also rediscovered my love for math and desire to teach it from my college algebra professor. During my pursuit of my education degree, I had several wonderful professors that helped me determine the kind of teacher I wanted to be.”

When she is not in the classroom, Fischer has other ways that she enjoys spending her time.

“I enjoy reading, playing games, baking, and working on crafts. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and my family that has been completely supportive of me; My parents, my talented younger sister, and my amazing nephews.”
