Blackwell’s Carter Barriger – athlete spotlight presented by Stillwater Medical Blackwell

By Derrick Smith

Throughout the life of a kid, athlete or not, they have several people that can influence them and play a role in who they become as adults. Some can be positive influences while others may be negative influences. Carter Barriger says that throughout his life, there have been a number of people that have always been in his corner.

“My mom and dad have been my biggest role models,” he said. “They have always been there for me in any situation that was good or bad. I also have to mention my grandparents who I have had the opportunity to share the greatest moments with. There has never been a dull moment in my life with them. My teachers also have been really great mentors through my years in school. They have taught me to be the greatest person I can possibly be. All of these people have impacted my life more than they could ever know. I do not know what I would do without them.”

Carter is a freshman at Blackwell High School. He plays third base and pitcher for the Maroons baseball team, a sport he has played for about 13 years. During that time, Barriger has seen himself grow and progress into the person he is today because of the work he has invested into it.

“It has taken a lot of hard work,” he said. “Also, being dedicated and committed. Quick thinking and acting on that has helped me a lot as well. You also have to have respect for your coaches, teammates, and opponents.”

As a student at Blackwell, Carter has learned from numerous teachers through the years. But he says that one of his junior high teachers would have to be his favorite.

“Mr. Doug Williams was my eighth grade English teacher,” he recalled. “He taught me the true meaning of wisdom, kindness, compassion, and respect. He always had an interesting story to tell that made your day even better than it already was.”

Along with sports, Carter is also a member of the Future Farmers of America and a representative for the student council.
