OFFENSE
Coming off a trip to the quarterfinal round in the Class B playoffs, coach John Greenfield heads into his 18th season as head coach with his most inexperienced roster. However, he is excited for the opportunity to see how his young team responds. “This season will be a good test for our players and staff,” he said. With only three starters returning from last year’s team, the Bulldogs will have to adapt early in the season and buy into their team’s game plan every week. Gage Keith (6-0, 165, Sr.) is making the switch to quarterback in his final season with the Bulldogs. As an upperclassman, with lots of experience on the field, Greenfield will look for him to lead the team even as he continues to get more comfortable in his new role. Colton VanFossen (5-7, 155, Sr.) returns at wideout and will be a reliable pass catching target for Keith as the Bulldogs find their identity early in the season. Davenport wants to have a balanced and simple approach on offense but expect multiple formations throughout the year.
DEFENSE
The Bulldogs only have one returning starter on defense in two-way stud Peyton Gaylord (6-0, 240, Jr.) who is a force in the trenches on both the offensive and defensive lines. Gaylord has been a two-way starter since his freshman year and “is a joy to coach,” Greenfield said. “He’s a very hard worker who does everything possible to make himself a great student-athlete.” The Bulldogs will run a base 3-2 defense in 2022. They want to disguise coverages, bring pressure, and force turnovers. Although the Bulldogs will have a lot of new faces in 2022, they are excited for the opportunity to compete and see how their young players react to the challenge.
