Luther Lions Girls Basketball Preview – Presented by Central Rural Electric Cooperative

Coach: Johnny Vick

21-22 Record: 23-4

The Luther Lady Lions and head coach Johnny Vick are returning to the hardwood after a trip to the state tournament quarterfinal a year ago. Luther returns three starters from last year’s team and is looking to make another trip to the state tournament. The Lady Lions not only return the core of their roster, but have also added a transfer student with big upside.

Halyn Browning (So.) is a VYPE Top 100 nominee and one of the top players in the state – in any class – and true a playmaking point guard. Browning can handle the ball, pass, score, and defend as well as anyone. Browning has already been receiving attention from colleges across the country including Weber State, Abilene Christian University, Southern Mississippi and looks to gain the attention of more schools as she continues her high school career. In addition to playing for the Lady Lions, Browning is also the starting point guard for the Trae Young 16u AAU Team and loves competing at the highest level.

Hailey Kulhman (Jr.) is coming off a big summer and has coaches expecting a big season. Kulhman can play multiple roles either down in the post or spread the floor on the wing. She has great size and is gaining interest from several Division II schools and has the talent to continue her career at the next level.

Sasha Cook is an underclassman who has been working hard to work her way into the rotation. Cook is the type of player to show up early for practice and stay late working on her game. Coaches admire Cook’s attitude and say that she makes the most of every opportunity and they are excited to see her development.

Ashtynn Barnett is a newcomer to Luther. Barnett was a standout at her previous school and will make an immediate impact for the Lady Lions. “She will become the team’s vocal leader,” Vick said. “She has that type of energy and averaged 20 points at her previous school.”

Unfortunately for the Lady Lions Addison Harris will miss the 2022-23 season with a knee injury. Harris had been a leader on the court but will have to bring her same passion and energy from the sidelines this season. Harris still attends every practice and workout, though her on court presence will be greatly missed, she will be Luther’s top supporter this year.
