Ponca City’s Devin Zimmerschied – athlete spotlight presented by Tom Henley, Shelter Insurance

By Derrick Smith

There is a lot of work involved in becoming the best athlete that you can be. Obviously, putting in the practice and workout time is important, but Devin Zimmerschied says that you must go beyond that.

“You have to practice hard, even when no one is watching you,” he said. “When the coaches and your teammates are not there continue to work hard, knowing that you are doing all that you can do, and you will see the growth.”

Devin is a senior at Ponca City High School where he is a dual-sport athlete. He is a strong safety on the football team, while on the soccer team he plays midfielder.

There have been people that have played a role in Devin’s life over the years. But he says that one person has been a huge influence on him.

“My dad would have to be my biggest role model,” he said. “He taught me so much about football and life in general. I would not be the person or athlete I am today without him.”

Throughout his career and life, Zimmerschied has had moments that stick with him because of the impact they had on him.

“I would have to say that the most memorable moment for me would be getting the Player of the Game award during my first varsity game. It felt great to make such an impact on my first high school game.”

Over the years, Devin has earned numerous awards and honors in both sports. He was All-District honorable mention in soccer during his sophomore year while in football, he won honorable mention All-State during his junior year, and All-District and All-Conference during his senior year. Away from sports, he is a member of the Saint Mary’s youth group, the National Honor Society, and Boys State. He has committed to attend Southwestern College in Kansas after graduation.

Ponca City head football coach, Scott Harmon, says that Devin is an outstanding defender and was a key part of the team.

“Zim is the best flat defender I have ever coached at any level,” he said. “He gave us great run support and made some great plays. He made some great plays against some of the best competition in the state.”
