Ripley’s Karsten Spiva – North OK Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Central Rural Electric Cooperative

By Derrick Smith

Role models can have a big influence on the lives of those that look up to them. Karsten Spiva says that there are a few people that have had a huge impact on his life and that he would not be the person that he is today without them.

“Two of the biggest influences on my life have been coach Hoffman and coach Scott,” he said. “Both of these men were not only great teachers of the game but even better at being great Christian role models who live out their faith. They are more concerned about the young men their players become versus their success on the field or the court. Another great influence has been my Papa Greg. He has taught me to value family, always work hard for what you have, and the art of humor and wit.”

Spiva is a senior at Ripley High School, where he is a multi-sport athlete. He plays guard on the basketball team, while on the baseball field, you can find him playing pitcher, first base, or in the outfield. He began playing baseball in little league and he has been playing the game ever since.

Over his career, Spiva has learned a lot about the game of baseball. But he says that being a part of a team has been just as impactful.

“During my career, I have learned the importance of putting my team first and understanding my role to make my team successful,” he said. “I have enjoyed the experience of time spent with my team and the memories made with coaches and teammates on the court/field, during camps, and trips we’ve taken together.”

Spiva says that there is another person that has had an influence on his life and that is his Ag teacher Chase McGolden.

“He has taught me to work hard and compete with integrity,” Karsten said. “He also helped me to see that being successful with humility is important.”

Along with playing sports, Karsten is a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), yearbook, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and the Ripley Academic Society.
