Glencoe Panthers Boys Basketball Preview – Presented by Jeff Bryant Shelter Insurance

Coach: Jeff Weedn

21-22 Record: 30-2

The Panthers enter this season as the reigning Class B state champions after defeating Roff 46-45 in the championship game at the big house. Fourth year head coach Jeff Weedn’s squad has experience and is ready to try to hoist the gold ball again.

“We are excited for this upcoming season,” coach Weedn said. “Our boys will be led by state tournament MVP Jaken Weedn. Another player taking on a larger role this season will be his younger brother Jaxton Weedn. We hope for the return of Tre’ Speer in February as he continues to recover from Tommy John Surgery this past summer. We also have a few other players that have waited in the wings for their chance, and they will have an opportunity this season.”

Jaken Weedn (6-0, Sr.) has been the leading scorer at Glencoe every season during his high school career. He is an incredible shooter, a gym rat, and has a relentless work ethic to improve every day. He has scored 1,592 career points and carries a career scoring average of 18.3 points per game. Looking for a midseason return, Tre’ Speer (6-3, Sr.) has been a three-year starter at Glencoe. He had an outstanding junior season last year averaging 12.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 7.0 assist per game. Unfortunately, he suffered an arm injury playing summer baseball, but the Panthers are hopeful to get him back before the playoffs.

Leading rebounder from a year ago, Jaxton Weedn (6-2, So.) averaged 6.6 boards per game as a freshman. He is a great shooter, with an incredible basketball IQ, and plays with tremendous toughness. Logan Vyrostek (6-3, So.) will look to increase his role for the team this season. He has a knack for doing things right and he is a hard worker. Some other players to keep an eye out for this season are Wyatt Manning (5-10, Jr.), Jesse Ross (5-10, So.), and Connor Bailey (6-0, So.).

Assistant coaches this season are Jaren Weedn, Nathan Cullen, and Jonah Davis W.
