Perkins and Cushing meet for the 25th consecutive year on September 9th. The teams have each won 12 games over that time span. Cushing has won two in a row.

OFFENSE

Dawayne Hudson has high expectations for the 2022 season with seven starters returning on offense for the Demons. “We will be a spread offense looking for ways to stretch the defense vertically and horizontally. We will want to use different tempo, motions, formations to find ways to score and move the chains,” he said. “We want to play fast and be physical. Use our strengths offensively to attack the defense.” Two-way threat Eric (Tre) Stevenson (6-0, 251, Jr.) is just the man for the job. In 2021 Stevenson rushed for over 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns while Beck Smith (5-6, 150, Jr.) added 385 yards and three scores of his own. Braxton Lightfoot (5-9, 175, Sr.), appearing on offense in multiple roles, contributed 15 catches, 150 yards, and three touchdowns in 2021. A familiar receiving trio will take the field in 2022 after finding success in 2021. Quincy Mouton (5-10, 160, Jr.) had 11 catches for 253 yards. Cutter Greene (6-1, 190, Jr.) hauled in 16 catches for 253 yards and five touchdowns. Tight end Brett Field (6-1, 185, Sr.) rounded out the party with four catches for 60 yds and a pair of scores.

DEFENSE

The Demons return eight starters on defense in 2022. “We will be a multiple defense basing out of 3-4. Our two pillars on defense are to stop the run and not get beat deep. We will be exotic in blitzes and coverages,” Hudson said. The goal is to limit opponents’ opportunities for success and to capitalize on any mistakes. In 2021 Hagen Cundiff (5-10, 175, Jr.) and Lightfoot, a two-way starter, combined for nearly 200 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and a handful of sacks. Daniel Nelson (6-1, 250, Jr.) provided five sacks of his own. Daxton Edwards (5-8, 150, Sr.) had 58 tackles, two interceptions, and broke up a dozen passes. Stevenson and Mouton filled up the stat sheets on both sides of the ball as well. Together they accumulated nearly 100 tackles, five sacks, eleven passes broken up, and four interceptions. Demon fans may also want to keep an eye out for two-way underclassman Braiton Applegate (So.) who rushed for four touchdowns in 2021 as a freshman, but has been putting on weight in the offseason and will get a chance to start at outside linebacker in 2022.
