Golf is not just a game or sport for Stillwater High School junior Lucy Darr, it’s a way of life.
The game touches nearly every aspect of her life. From representing Stillwater High School, to following her father’s career as a coach at the collegiate level, golf is at the center of day-to-day life for Darr.
“My dad has been a big influence in my life because he’s coached me since I got serious about golf and he played in college and coaches now for the men’s team at Oklahoma State University, so we have a strong relationship because of our love for the game of golf,” said Darr.
With any student-athlete participating in sports, representing your school can carry some weight, but making good grades is a top priority. The same can be said for Darr whose favorite subject in school is English class.
“Academics are important to me because if I don’t have good grades then I can’t play golf. My favorite teacher is Mr. Davis because he’s super funny. It means a lot being able to play for Stillwater High School because I want to try and bring back a state championship for the school,” said Darr.
Darr said being on the team at Stillwater is something special and she looks forward to seeing what they can accomplish this season and next.
“I like how my teammates are all my best friends,” said Darr.
Together they have shared many great moments on and off the course.
“One of my favorite memories is being able to win the conference as a team and an individual for the first time in the history of Stillwater High School girl’s golf,” said Darr.
Last season Darr and teammate Amy Reavis placed in the top 14 at state and as a team, the Lady Pioneers were eighth overall in Class 6A.
Stillwater head coach Angela Knott said of Darr, “Lucy placed 2nd in the first tournament of the 2023 season with a 72. She finished 14th at state as a sophomore. She is obsessed with golf and plays or practices in any spare time she has.”
Reavis returns to the lineup this year as well and is shooting rounds in the 70s. Also look for Jade Gosney, Nikki Pitts, and Kennedy Reed on the varsity team with Abby Aranda, Meredith Baker, Carsyn Berger, and Brielle Cook completing the team.
In late April, the Lady Pioneers will compete at Regionals at the Ponca City Country Club before heading off to the state competition at Meadowbrook Country Club in early May.
