Cushing Tigers Football Preview 2023 – Presented by Cushing Family Practice

Coach: RUSTY MORGAN

13-1

OFFENSE

Cushing returns four starters on offense from its state runner-up team in 2022. The Tigers, who were unbeaten until falling to Wagoner in the Class 4A State Championship game, welcomes back VYPE Top 100 nominee, wide receiver Brady Matheson (6-0, 180, Sr.), who had 35 receptions for 621 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. “Brady became a full-time starter at WR on our state runner-up team last year,” Morgan said. “Excellent athlete that can play anywhere on the field. Hard worker who wants to be great.” Senior quarterback John Hilligoss (5-10, 175) saw limited action in 2022 and completed 10 of 13 passes for 161 yards and two TDs, while adding 111 yards on the ground. Receiver Lane Wood (6-3, 185, Jr.) also returns. Wood had 135 yards with a pair of TDs. Lonnie Schuler (6-1, 220, Sr.), Kade Ralston (6-1, 225, Sr.) and Bret Griffeth (5-11, 195, Jr.) will bolster the offensive line. The Tigers will use a multiple spread. “Use multiple formations and personnel groups to put our guys in the best position to succeed. Get the ball to playmakers in space,” Morgan said.

DEFENSE

The Tigers also return four starters on the defensive side of the ball. Hilligoss, who will also be a force defensively in the secondary at a safety position, recorded 57 tackles in 2022. Conner Morlen (5-11, 190, Sr.), Wyatt Heisler (5-11, 185, Sr.) and Michael Cruz (6-0, 210, Jr.) will provide experience along the defensive line. Morlen had 37 tackles and three sacks a year ago, and Heisler collected 41 tackles and five sacks. Sophomore Kellen Fry (5-11, 190) will lead the linebacker group in Cushing’s 4-2-5 alignment. “Aggressive, attacking style of play,” Morgan said of his defense. “Will be multiple on the back end and with pressures. “2023 will be an exciting year. We will have a great mix of returning starters and new guys who are ready to step up and play key roles. There will be competition at every position, which is great to have. Leadership is always a key factor of successful programs, and this group of seniors will be ready for that task. I can’t wait to get going with this group.”
