Blackwell’s Carter Barriger – Baseball Spotlight – Presented by Stillwater Medical Blackwell

By Scott Metz

For Blackwell High School junior Carter Barriger, playing baseball is a skill that he has honed as a veteran of the sport, having played baseball for 14 years. His roles a pitcher and shortstop are vital to the Blackwell Maroons.

When asked what motivates him, Carter stated, “What motivates me the most is that I know every day I wake up, I have another chance to make an impact on my life or someone else’s life. Some people go to bed the night before and don’t get to experience that blessing the next day would bring.”

Every student athlete has a memory in their sports career that sticks out as the most memorable. Carter recalled that moment, “The highlight of my career has probably been the season where I have finished multiple games with 8 or more strikeouts as a starting pitcher. Which was last season.”

In regards of what it has taken for Carter to become successful in baseball, he stated, “It has taken many hours and long days to where I am now. Many days alone in the cage and on the mound perfecting my craft whether it would be hot or cold outside. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears have been shed throughout the process. It has been a very long journey to where I am now but the journey is still continuing.”

Behind every student athlete is a role model that they look up to. For Carter, he looks towards family. Carter explained, “My mom and dad are the biggest role models I have. They always make sure I am on the path to succeed whether that be in the classroom or on the field. They have sacrificed so much for me and I could never be more thankful to have them in my life. All of the time and effort they have put into me will pay off tremendously.”

Carter plans on pursuing higher education after graduating from high school. “After graduating, I plan to attend college and earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, to become a Registered Nurse. While doing so, I also hope to play college baseball.”
