Perry’s Spylar Webb – Athlete Spotlight Presented by Stillwater Medical Perry

By Derrick Smith

Cheerleading is about more than showing up on the sidelines of a game, cheering on the team, and keeping the crowd involved in the game. There are also cheer competitions and a lot of preparation work that goes into it. Spylar Webb says that cheer is a team sport, and you are dependent on your teammates to help you be successful.

“There is a lot that goes into being a successful cheerleader,” she said. “It has taken me teamwork, confidence, and giving 100 percent to be the best I can at cheerleading.”

Spylar is a senior at Perry High School where she is a flyer on the cheer team. She has been involved in cheerleading for about six years and has had some enjoyable experiences on the mat with her teammates. She says that a moment of team success stands out as her favorite.

“The highlight moment of my career would have to be winning first place at cheer regionals my senior year,” she said. “It was a really great experience and an awesome moment.”

Jeanna Browne, the head cheer coach at Perry, says that Webb is an outstanding cheerleader, student, and a great example for the younger members of the cheer team.

“Spylar is our senior captain this year,” she said. “She has been on the squad for four years and is a 4.0 student. She shows strong leadership and loves cheering for the Maroons.”

Webb attributes part of her success to the amazing role models that she has had to look up to throughout her life and career.

“Some of my biggest role models are my family,” she said. “My mom is one because she shows me how to stand up for myself. Another would be my grandma because she gives the best advice. Finally, my dad because he shows me how to work hard.”

Along with cheer, Spylar is also a member of the National Honor Society and the student council.
